SUMMER 2024 UPDATE

It’s been a while but here’s a post to catch you up with what’s been happening in the garden this summer.

How is your garden growing? Are you finding there are successes and failures? Yes, it’s the same in my garden…first it was too much rain and now it’s too much heat and humidity. Some things went really well though and others are struggling. It doesn’t help that I seem to have a resident bunny that likes snacking on my flowers!

This year I have concentrated more on growing flowers for drying and basing my business just on the dried flowers and natural eco printing and dyeing. So that is why you haven’t seen me at markets this summer with my fresh flowers. I am still taking orders for custom bouquets, arrangements and buckets of fresh flowers, so get in touch if you need local fresh flowers that are lovingly grown.

There is lots happening for me and the garden in August.

Canadian Flowers Week August 15-21

If you have been following me for a while you will know I’m passionate about locally grown flowers and this is one of my favourite events. Be sure to follow along on my Instagram or Facebook

Are you celebrating Canadian Flowers Week with locally grown flowers?

Just like with the local slow food movement there is a growing awareness of the impact on the environment from importing flowers from around the world or across the country. As we all try to reduce our carbon footprint we can gradually make small changes that have a far reaching effect.

Here are just a few reasons to support your local flower farmers or florists that use locally grown flowers.

✅ Flowers grown by your local flower farmer 👩‍🌾 will be freshly picked and locally delivered saving thousands of travel miles

✅ Seasonal flowers – each season brings a new selection of flowers that are naturally in bloom at that time

✅ Local seasonal flowers are a great way to reconnect with nature

✅ Smaller carbon footprint due to reduced travel to market, lower inputs of artificial heat, watering, chemicals and pesticides, reduced packaging, on site composting and encouraging local wildlife and pollinators

✅ Small scale local production keeps jobs and farms in your community

✅ Local growers are moved by the seasons and get excited to bring you the best of what is currently growing in the fields from early spring bulbs, late spring blossom, early summer peonies, roses, late summer dahlias and onto sunflowers 🌻

And for me it’s dried flowers all winter!

Join Me on August 18 for a Flower Installation

Join me in my garden on Sunday August 18th for a celebration of local flowers.

Proposed schedule :
9am – 10:30am   Join me to help build a flower installation
10:30 – 11am      Clean up and coffee/tea break
11am – 1pm        Garden and installation open to visitors

Let’s Celebrate Canadian Grown Flowers!

To celebrate Canadian Flowers Week I invite you to join me in my garden to build a flower installation. We will be using fresh and dried flowers to make an amazing installation around my pergola. If the weather is rainy or unsuitable, we will decorate my car under the shelter of the carport.

To save your spot for the build contact me now as space will be limited to 8 people. There is no cost for this – FREE!

Note that as per the Canadian Flowers Week website Our sustainability commitments request that no plastic, no foam, or one-time use non-recyclable materials be used to participate”

If you just want to view the garden and installation I will be hosting an “Open Garden” from 11am until 1pm. Come and enjoy the garden and installation, chat about locally grown flowers and get an inside view of where I grow my flowers! And maybe grab a photo or two with the installation.

I hope to see you in the garden soon!

Got a question? I’m happy to answer if you get in touch with me HERE
